Interior architects Claire Bataille (1940) and Paul ibens (1939-2020) belong to one of the first generations to shape the discipline of interior architecture in Belgium. They have put the importance of interior design on the map. Their work became a point of reference for students and colleagues.

Designs for houses, interiors, furniture and objects designed by Bataille & ibens are of great importance, as is detail, proportions and use of materials that are clearly visible. The studio has been around for 60 years!

Characteristic of the design practice of Bataille & ibens is the search for what can be described as ‘the invisible present’. For Bataille and ibens, the power of design lay in the balance between the existing and the transformation. The result is experienced as evident, as if it had always been there. Despite this pursuit of the invisible, balancing on the interface between late modernism, postmodernism and minimalism, they developed a signature of their own.

They worked for leading brands such as the Dutch ’t Spectrum in the 1970s. Put the design of the ‘minimalist’ table like the TE21 back in those days and you see that it was progressive design. And the modernistic design of a TE21 is full of details and beautiful lines. And the transformation of the TE21 is complete because today it has proven to be a timeless design.
