Murano glass is made on the Venetian island of Murano, which has specialized in fancy glasswares for centuries. Murano’s glassmakers led Europe for centuries, developing or refining many technologies including crystalline glass, enamelled glass (smalto), golden glass (goldstone), multicolored glass (millefiori), milk glass (lattimo), and imitation gemstones made of glass.
Today, Murano is home to a vast number of factories among which Barovier & Toso. Founded in 1295, this company is one of the oldest family businesses in the world. It specializes in crystalline glass, mother-of-pearl glass, and gold-free cornelian red glass and is well known for it’s elegant and beautifully crafted lamps.
